Nestled in a corner of the former grandiose Clark estate in upstate Suffern, New York, lie a crumbling rock wall, a basketball hoop long disused, splintered doors and leafy branch overhangs. The lawn is unruly, sprouting weeds and fallen logs. In an earlier time the barns with stable and attached garage were freshly painted. They stood as solid structures behind the main house. The grass was mowed and trim. Horses were well groomed and the family car was buffed and polished. Now there is benign neglect. The sun filters in, dances with the shade, and softens the overall scene. A patina coats the memories of elegant living and lingers in the afternoon heat. The scene has the beauty and melancholy of its faded past.
