That includes me! A trip to the gardens revealed beauty and harmony in the surroundings. So much greenery and so many pink and red tulips on display. The outdoor cafeteria with chairs and tables offered a welcoming spot for coffee. The clouds overhead were puffy and floating lazily. A marvelous day trip to view other adults and children enjoying the settings. There we spent the year of COVID 19 under the protective watchfulness of my son and his family. For entertainment, our car outings explored the countryside of silos and weathered barns, cornfields and border fencings, horse farms and wandering deer, and lakes with swimming geese. 

From the passenger window of the car, I used  an infrared converted camera, a choice related to this new existence.  No horns, sirens, or chattering voices rising from cityscapes. No lobbies, elevators, or glaring street lights. The silence was golden.The mountains in view changed color and form from dawn to dusk and seasonally. Curving roads, many steep and hilly, with scant traffic, furnished thrilling rides. Houses spaced widely apart were tucked into woods. How could I capture and process this new sense of otherworldliness?

Raw infrared images may be processed in several ways in Lightroom and Photoshop. I had unlimited time and the thirsty inclination to experiment and to create a vision of the surreal experience of my isolation in vacant surroundings, peopled only with my immediate family.

I tried a variety of techniques: color tinting some images in shades of green and magenta; in others, deepening the blue and tan shades that typify infrared photos with a corrected white balance. For others, I chose sepia tones. Had it not been for Covid, it is unlikely that I would have practiced so assiduously. in my case, the times shaped my mindset, effort, and output.

The paved and unpaved roads are wide open as they bend and curve with the landscape topography. Often the feeling in car excursions is akin to a rollercoaster ride as the roadway dips, turns, and levels out. Trees and shrubs and an occasional house dot the scenic pathways as do post and lintel fences and corn fields.

The colors were spectacular, Gotham meets Edvard Munch. From a bedroom window, I captured the colors before they faded into darkness.

I watch for her. She opens her window just a crack and jingles the little bells that she holds in her hand. She stands by a beautiful flowering potted plant. She does not know that I am photographing her with my zoom lens from my apartment across the avenue where she and I live. I press my face against the window and wave, but she does not see me. She is looking down, not across on our high floor level.  I am proud of her dedication. She is a regular. She never misses an evening to show her gratitude to the front line workers in the pandemic that is raging. We live in the NYC epicenter. One day, hopefully, when it is safe to go unmasked and outside, I will see her and I will introduce myself and share with her the pictures that I took of her valiant stand each night as the horns and bells and cheers filled the 7pm slot for a few minutes.

They were welcomed with a cheering and clapping crowd of onlookers and guided along a path by Riverside Park Conservancy employees. The weather was beautiful, and so were the goats as they strutted and galloped along the path to their enclave. A multi-branched crabapple tree blots the sky with bursting blossoms and buds. The newly renovated asphalt pathway at 91st on Riverside Drive leads to the grove directly across from the Hippo Playground where walkers and children sport about. From here on in, the grove is a daily testament to the beauty of spring.

Passersby gather to admire its construction and the jovial pig aloft dressed in Santa garb. By day, the trees are clever and whimsical. At night, they assume a magical air of glittering mystery as the caps, tops, and lights combine to rival the offerings of elegant jewelry shops.

Dana Discovery Center in Central Park's Harlem Meer floats a Christmas tree in the lake. Actually, there are seventeen trees, tightly bound together to create a view of evergreen substance. Little lights adorn the tree; so too a star on top of the biggest fir. In daylight, the view is lovely. I am sure it is spectacular at night. Weekend Column: Mystery Doorman Becomes International Sensation


The entrance to the apartment building was awash with morning light. The June sun streamed through the filigreed cast iron door and splashed on an adjacent wall. The doorman on guard was silhouetted in sharp outline and then replicated in dim shadow on the wall. The scene evolved in an array of sepia tones.

“Stop for a moment,” I requested the doorman and camera ready, aimed my lens at his figure in the mix of light and muted shadow play.

On my computer screen his portrait evoked mystery, subtle drama,  and metamorphosis. Over the course of this past summer, I submitted the image to four juried gallery exhibitions in Vermont, South Carolina, Oregon and Rome, Italy. (The Metamorphosis exhibit at the Darkroom Gallery in Vt., the Contemporary Portrait exhibit at the SE Center for Photography in South Carolina, the Photo Shoot: 2018 at the Black Box Gallery in Oregon, and the Shadows exhibit at the Loosen Art Gallery in Rome.) The portrait was accepted in all of the gallery exhibits which were curated by prominent jurors. Loosen Art Gallery even informed me that my image was chosen from among the 778 images that had been submitted.

So who is this mystery man traveling the United States from coast to coast and now crossing the Atlantic Ocean for an exhibition in Rome? He is the doorman of 575 West End Avenue, Lulzim Prelvukas from Kosovo, known to me as Luis. Married with two children, he has been employed at 575 WEA since the year 2000 and he delights in his work assisting tenants and their families, watching children grow up, and even posing for my camera shots. He praises the management of the building, an Italian Renaissance design by Gaetano Ajello, constructed in 1915 and  dramatic with its high storied entrance captured in the multiple-exhibitions photo.

The bird swoops and sits, often posing for seconds while chirping its tweet. It is difficult to catch its flight, so sudden, swift, and unexpected. With patience, however, I have managed to photograph its wingspread and occasionally some blurry flight. Its blue colors are so vibrant, mixed with the lighter  blue and white checkered pattern on its tail. In one image it appears to be doing a Fred Astaire time step. What a performer! Active duty Sailors, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen participated in the services along with the US Navy Band performing musical tributes. Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War in period uniforms were in attendance as well as state and city leaders. I heard the bird tweeting through my open bedroom window and quickly grabbed my camera with a 40-150 lens. I was able to grab a few shots of this bird most often referred to as a pest in bird literature. I like its long yellow beak, suggesting that this bird was female. I wonder who will land on the mesh-covered railing next...nice to see a cardinal, but I doubt it. The buds of the star magnolia are swelling.A pink blush radiates from the newly trimmed spirea bushes. Late afternoon shadows indicate the lengthening day as winter nears its end. A young boy on the lake bank pierces the melting ice with a branch. Spring cannot be far behind.

One factor contributing to this largesse is being selected as one of the 500 posts in EXPLORE. 

"Explore is Flickr's way of showcasing the most interesting photos within a given point in time -- usually over a 24 hour period. Flickr receives about 6,000 uploads every minute -- That's about 8.6 million photos a day! From this huge group of images, the Flickr interestingness algorithm chooses only 500 images to showcase for each 24-hour period. That's only one image in every 17,000!" 

This photograph, selected by Flickr Explore on Feb. 7th, was taken on a jaunt in Riverside Park, NYC, as I headed towards the Hudson River at 83rd Street. Figures come and go under the arch leading to the river and I often photograph the passersby on foot and on bicycle. On this day I managed to capture some silhouettes in the distance. They add an element of mystery to the scene as well as capture the wintry quality of the day with the dried hydrangeas in the foreground. As of Sunday, February 11th, this image has earned 83,092 views, 380 faves, and 21 comments. The theme is Winter Gardens and Seedheads, one arc of the ongoing bud-flower-seed cycle. All photos are macro images, metal prints, vivid in color, and all were taken during the winter months at the Riverside Park Community Garden at Riverside and 91st St. They line the staircase between the first and second floors and remind us of inevitable seasonal change and the beauty of a plant when it is “over.” In personal respects, it is an homage to Piet Oudolf, the Danish landscape designer (HIgh Line) who recognized the ways in which winter gardens add different forms, colors, and textures to the surroundings.

The looping wall is by Andy Goldsworthy, revival of an ancient craft. The other straight line images (in color and in black and white) also highlight the artistry of his beautiful wall making as the wall heads in a straight line up a steep hill and across an open field on the other side of the pond. Walls may be useful for delimiting boundaries...as long as one can hop over them easily or comfortably chat as neighbors.

At Christmas time, the lobbies are decorated with ornamented trees to celebrate the holidays. Festive and grand, they are welcoming sights. My own building has a fourteen foot tree, truly splendiferous, and  I decided to do a little comparison viewing of others in the neighborhood. On a drizzly, cloudy morning, my visits introduced me to the sparkling lights and and radiant gleams of lobby interiors spiffy with holiday visual delights. A solitary egret made my Saturday afternoon with its nestling in reeds, elegant posing, and sudden flights. Visitors gathered to walk along paths, recline on the grass in the sun, and sit on benches to dream their dreams. Such a lovely spot to enjoy in the midst of a bustling New York City.

The playhouse sits by a lake in upstate NY. It is a hideaway for both children and adults at an ancestral family gathering summer home.

A gathering slightly reminiscent of Seurat's A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, only different. This is a Saturday afternoon, in the 21st century, with helmeted bicyclists checking cell phones, a Rangers fan in matching shirt and cap, a straw hat shading the sun at a checkerboard table, and cars parked by a curb. Yet the mood is similar, all pleasantry with life fulfilling moments.

Each treatment creates a different mood. A single straggler scrambling over some rocks adds an element of mystery to the scene. Although the image was taken in late morning, it appears that these are nighttime shots. Early leaf budding adds another level of eeriness, an aspect of ghostliness in the monochromatic image..

Dear Diary:

As an octogenarian with strong, supple knees, I am fortunate to live on the Upper West Side with walking proximity to both Riverside and Central Parks. “Never leave home without a camera” is my mantra, and has been since I discovered digital photo making on retirement from teaching a decade ago.

Thanks to Christo and Jeanne-Claude for “The Gates” project in 2005, I was able to practice the triad of Aperture, ISO and Exposure settings in my first tiny point-and-shoot camera. The project’s saffron nylon curtains in Central Park billowed into blue sky, sun and February winter air, sparking my love for rich color and mystical shapes.

Alas, the project was short-lived, destined for obliteration after a brief two weeks. Since then, I have searched for a scene reminiscent, when wind shapes color, lifting fabric into a dance of artful form and dreamlike beauty.

Behold! It happened on a rain-soaked windy day in June by Riverside Park. A bicyclist came whizzing by and a strong summer breeze insinuated under his lemon-colored slicker and lifted it skyward so that he appeared ready to fly off if he so wished.

The two  photos could not have been more different. A landscape seen of Lake Skinnatati in Harriman State Park sparkled diamonds on the crisp cold Saturday when the sun was sky high. Framed by tree trunks, rocks, and a stanchion of far distant trees, the blue of the lake is deep. In contrast the other Explore selection is a still life, It pays to have a camera with you at all times. A solitary room in a warren of rooms that I saw on a visit to a doctor's appointment offered a view of a vase, a scalloped dish, and a curving shell on a stand. The room was dim, but the chrysanthemum green-yellow of the vase shone. Unhesitant, I entered the vacant room and snapped a series of images before meeting with my doctor, whose regular offices had been flooded in the cold snap the previous week. The vase still life setup was arranged by someone else, but I thank whomever it was for the artful arrangement. The first was taken indoors as my old reliable orchid plant burst forth. The second image was a final shot after traipsing through Central Park to get some snow scenes. Leaving the park at 86th and Central Park West, I admired the blue sky and the towers of El Dorado, which I can view from my bedroom window. A dog walker enhanced the scene.

Cozy and warm, I did my best to take some images of the snow pounding blizzard of 2016 in NYC. Not an easy thing to do so high up. Yet the images I captured display the blanket whiteness of the storm. Next day and day thereafter, blue sky and digging out. Like tiny stars, poised on slender branches, they twinkle against the mauve and blue backgrounds of a clear winter day. To capture the blossoms makes the frigid journey to their park site worthwhile. Aline Smithson is the juror. This is a self portrait, shot in a pool in Nantucket a few summers ago with a camera in underwater housing. I love swimming and the sensation of "oceanic oneness," a term Freud uses in Civilization and its Discontents.
