Just the Bluejay The bluejay deserves a gallery of its own. The bird swoops and sits, often posing for seconds while chirping its tweet. It is difficult to catch its flight, so sudden, swift, and unexpected. With patience, however, I have managed to photograph its wingspread and occasionally some blurry flight. Its blue colors are so vibrant, mixed with the lighter  blue and white checkered pattern on its tail. In one image it appears to be doing a Fred Astaire time step. What a performer! Let's All Sing Let's all sing like the birdies sing

Let's all fly on high...

Summertime and the birds are winging it, through the air like silver streaks. Some flaunt their wing spans in gorgeous display. Feeders attract them, and squirrels as well. It's fun to watch their comings and goings, and their antics as well from my dining room window, partially hidden from their view. Memorial Day Commemoration, 2018 An overflowing crowd of all ages assembled on the plaza of the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument at Riverside Park and 89th Street for a service on this Memorial Day. Music and words were solemn and patriotic befitting the occasion. Active duty Sailors, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen participated in the services along with the US Navy Band performing musical tributes. Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War in period uniforms were in attendance as well as state and city leaders. A wreath laying ceremony was a moving event. _5280035_5280035OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA _5280022_5280022OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA _5280038_5280038OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA _5280145_5280145OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA _5280044_5280044OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA _5280012_5280012OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA _5280073_5280073OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

A Day's Difference What a difference a day makes in photo shooting. On this weekend eve, I meandered around an engagement party hosted in NYC for relatives and friends. The engaged couple flashed sparks of love to each another amidst the gathering group. The next day, late afternoon, I photographed a hockey game where the players whirled around the ice in swirling patterns. My son and grandson on the same Hurricane team were subjects I focused on, but the goalie was a subject I could not neglect. What a joyful Mother's Day weekend! _5110092_5110092OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA _5110095_5110095OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA _5110097_5110097OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Central Park Conservatory Wisteria in Bloom Like low hanging fruit, the purple blossoms of the wisteria adorn the wrought iron pergola in the Central Park Conservatory. The Tulip Festival The tulip festival is now up and running at the Westside Community Garden on 89th St and Columbus. A quick preview week last revealed the beginning of the blossoming beauties. The garden also has lovely magnolia trees that were busting their blooms. Now is the time to head back for the full display. _4180128_4180128OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA _4180116_4180116OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA _4180110_4180110OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA _4180095_4180095OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA _4180094_4180094OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA _4180106_4180106OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA _4180100_4180100OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Cherry Blossoms in Bloom in Central Park The Cherry Blossoms are popping in Central Park, exuberant and pink. A group of trees lines up in front of the reservoir on the west side of the park, entrance on Central Park West and 91st Street. School runners and dog walkers pass by. Neighborhood residents and tourists stroll too. It's a pretty site for visiting  even though the weather remains chilly. _4090034_4090034OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Burst into SongBurst into SongOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Nubby by the treeNubby by the treeOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA _4090011_4090011OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA _4090005_4090005OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA _4090002_4090002OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Starllng by Daylight Last week a house finch, this week a starling landed on my outdoor covered railing, 13 stories high. I heard the bird tweeting through my open bedroom window and quickly grabbed my camera with a 40-150 lens. I was able to grab a few shots of this bird most often referred to as a pest in bird literature. I like its long yellow beak, suggesting that this bird was female. I wonder who will land on the mesh-covered railing next...nice to see a cardinal, but I doubt it. April Fools’ Day on the Second April Fools’ Day came one day late...on the second. A surprise snow storm blanketed Central Park with a few inches of heavy snow. Clumps hung on branches as passersby wended their way along the paths, owners walked their dogs, and children played in the snow. March Snowstorm 2018 In early spring, late March threw a curveball. A wintry blast, a foot high of snow, coated New York City with pristine whiteness. In the early morning, a combination of sleet and snow faced undaunted New Yorkers who travelled on Broadway in the Upper West Side. Colors on many were vibrant as they passed me by. A toddler in a stroller reached out in unparalleled joy to touch the flakes. Now spring can make its inevitable march. _3210117_3210117OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA A Flakey WorldA Flakey WorldOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA _3210029_3210029OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA _3210026_3210026OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Legs and WheelsLegs and WheelsOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA _3210020_3210020OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA _3210106_3210106OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The Unicycle Challenge Here's a challenge! Riding a unicycle takes coordination, concentration, and balance. handlebars, just balancing and riding on one wheel. A beginner at Riverside Park was willing to pose for me as he practiced mastering this skill. He managed to stay upright, wave his arms around, and smile as brisk air and sunshine made the plaza a perfect spot for training. _3170002_3170002OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA _3170007_3170007OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA _3170009_3170009OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA _3170014_3170014OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA _3170016_3170016OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The Great Organ of St. John the Divine _2260055_2260055OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA On Mondays, at 1 PM, the sonorous sounds of the Great Organ in St. John the Divine Cathedral fill the cavernous space of this church. The organist also gives a brief talk on the construction of the church and the elements of the organ, explaining its difference from a piano. It is a well worth visit to see and hear great music in a great space, the Gothic design of the cathedral. _2260061_2260061OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA _2260025_2260025OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Church ribsChurch ribsOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Central Park Conservatory Garden and Harlem Meer: Hints of Spring At Harlem Meer and adjacent Central Park Conservatory Garden, the farthest northeast corner of the Upper West Side, there are early hints of spring. The buds of the star magnolia are swelling.A pink blush radiates from the newly trimmed spirea bushes. Late afternoon shadows indicate the lengthening day as winter nears its end. A young boy on the lake bank pierces the melting ice with a branch. Spring cannot be far behind.

Flickr Explore and Go Figure It amazes me that posting a photo on the popular web site Flickr, an image posting and sharing website,  can earn an amazing number of "looks" and "faves" and complimentary comments when least expected. One factor contributing to this largesse is being selected as one of the 500 posts in EXPLORE.

"Explore is Flickr's way of showcasing the most interesting photos within a given point in time -- usually over a 24 hour period. Flickr receives about 6,000 uploads every minute -- That's about 8.6 million photos a day! From this huge group of images, the Flickr interestingness algorithm chooses only 500 images to showcase for each 24-hour period. That's only one image in every 17,000!"

This photograph, selected by Flickr Explore on Feb. 7th, was taken on a jaunt in Riverside Park, NYC, as I headed towards the Hudson River at 83rd Street. Figures come and go under the arch leading to the river and I often photograph the passersby on foot and on bicycle. On this day I managed to capture some silhouettes in the distance. They add an element of mystery to the scene as well as capture the wintry quality of the day with the dried hydrangeas in the foreground. As of Sunday, February 11th, this image has earned 83,092 views, 380 faves, and 21 comments. This amazes me. Go figure. Three Silhouettes updateThree Silhouettes updateOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
