New York Christmas Tree Vendors: Sepia, Snow, and Lights

December 08, 2013  •  Leave a Comment

The first snow dustings printed in sepia tones resemble photographs found in old albums.  They suggest earlier times when passersby hurrying home stopped to admire and select a tree as the holidays drew near. The theme is recurrent, for as early as 1851, according to the New York Historical Society, a Catskill woodsman rented a corner in Greenwich village to sell his mountain trees. The clothing today would be different as well as the display of electrified lights and elaborate ornaments, but the excitement of carrying home a fresh-cut green tree to adorn with lights and tinsels purchased from a New York City sidewalk vendor is probably just as heady.
