AIPAD 2013 - What Stands Out

April 07, 2013  •  Leave a Comment

So much to see, look at, watch, overhear, by being part of an art happening in the throes of commercial marketeering with its hype and glad-handing. Fun and essential to have a camera to glimpse and speculate. So after all is said and done, what stands out? Three images of interaction, each quite different. No photograph is an island.

The first: the intensity and questioning gaze of the viewer. She is studying a face-forceful portrait image, indifferent to the wealth of background passersby carrying coffee cups. She is bending in, pocketing her hands, burdened with a heavy backpack, asking and waiting...

In the second, a jovial group confronts multiple life size images, each on a lower as-though-stepping-down level of the Chinese political activist Ai Weiwei. Against a brick wall, he speaks of corruption and assaults on democracy in his country. So far removed in time and place from his concerns who is listening? How brilliantly the broad-shouldered viewer's yellow sweater stands out, a symbolic beacon for illuminating political and economic ideas, radiant to catch attention.

In the third, Botticelli's Primavera in the guise of an iconic Grace Kelly look alike dominates the wall, her classically lovely countenance and upswept golden hair surrounded and lightly impressed with fanciful images of white daisies and gerberas, such purity contrasting with the sensuality of those full red lips. A young viewer stares into those cool and limpid green eyes with longing, admiration, fantasy dreaming. Only speculation.
