Inspired by an image of a firm handrail and steps inviting the climb to a distant openness, I thought of handrails within my own locale where concrete steps and winter branches collide and clumps of fallen leaves gather to blanket the borders of the incline. Railings may be angular, curving, or straight guiding direct as well as circuitous upward paths. Interesting metaphors for the journeys in life...some passages so direct and others so roundabout with byways and hidden corners. In color, how warm and glowing the climb appears. In black and white, harsher, requiring fortitude and resoluteness.
